October is a busy time for domestic violence advocates.   awareness_action_social_changeWe Zonta Pinellas members will host and attend fundraisers and educational sessions, and reach out to talk with candidates for the Florida Legislature. The equation for action from the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence helps us remember why we do what we do, not only in October, but throughout the year.

We offer a calendar of activities below to organize us all. The asterisks indicate key dates.  Below the calendar is a list explaining what’s happening when. And here is a lineup of upcoming learning options around the country, some of them online, identified by the National Center on Domestic and Sexual Violence. oct_dvam_2nd_2016-09-27_1424October 1--Dancing with the Stars of Tampa Bay featuring Zonta Pinellas member Dr. Carole Medvesky.  The event benefits nonprofits in our area including CASA (Community Action Stops Abuse), the domestic violence shelter serving DV victims in South Pinellas (below Ulmerton Road). Email Dee at dee@handsacrossthebay.org or call her at 727.573.7720, ext. 1 to see if tickets may still be purchased.  Visit the Dancing with the Stars of Tampa Bay website.

October 4-- National Night Out, a neighborhood safety awareness campaign, locally sponsored by the Clearwater Police Department and hosted by Super Target, Lowe’s, and Costco on Gulf-to-Bay, 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM.  Domestic violence programs such as the RCS Haven (serving DV victims and families who reside north of Ulmerton Road) and the Pinellas Violence Task Force will participate to familiarize the public with their services. Here’s an event flyer. Fun activities for the children and free food from a great line-up of vendors ensure a good time as we learn. dv_ceremony_2016-09-26_1254

October 16-October 22--National Week of Action led by National Network to End Domestic Violence.  Visit the Network’s website to see the events they are hosting as well as those they recommend for advocates to do across the country.

October 17-October 31--Zonta Club Pinellas members will visit candidates for the Florida Legislature from Pinellas County in face-to-face interviews. We wish to familiarize them with our concerns for preventing DV and human trafficking, emphasizing accountability and education for perpetrators, and responding with a united system of support across the community to ensure safety and bright futures for survivors and their families. Times TBD.  Call Doris Reeves-Lipscomb at 727.723.7714 for details.
